Select a numbered marker on the screenshot, or read through the notes below.
Input
Drives the signal into the fixed threshold. Turn it up for more compression.
VU meter
Gain reduction or output level, with the exact gain reduction in dB beside it.
Meter mode
GR shows gain reduction; +8 and +4 show output level; Off turns the meter lamps down.
Output
Sets the level after compression, before the output stage.
Attack and release
Attack from 800 µs to 20 µs, release from 1.1 s to 55 ms. Turn clockwise for faster.
Ratio
4, 8, 12 or 20 to 1, or ALL for the all-buttons sound: harder, grittier and pumping.
Mix
Blend the dry signal back in for parallel compression.
A/B and blind test
A/B plays the dry signal at the same loudness. Blind plays compressor and dry in random order over 8 rounds.

FET compressor features: fast attack, all-buttons mode and parallel mix
A FET limiting amplifier modelled at the circuit level, from the input transformer through the FET to the class-A output stage, so the knee, the release and the distortion behave the way the classic design does. Attack as fast as 20 microseconds, four ratios plus all-buttons mode, a parallel mix, and a level-matched A/B and blind test so extra gain can't fool you.
Input and output
Drive the input into a fixed threshold for more compression, then set the level with the output, the way FET limiters work.
Fast attack, musical release
Attack from 800 µs down to 20 µs, release from 1.1 s down to 55 ms, with recovery that follows the material.
Four ratios and all buttons
4, 8, 12 and 20 to 1, or press ALL for the aggressive all-buttons sound.
Circuit-level model
Gain reduction, knee and distortion come from a model of the FET circuit, run at 4x oversampling.
VU metering
Read gain reduction, or output level at +4 or +8, with a gain-reduction readout beside the meter.
Parallel mix
Blend in the dry signal, latency-compensated, for parallel compression.
Level-matched A/B and blind test
Compare with the dry signal at the same loudness, or take a blind test over 8 rounds, so a little extra output gain can't pass for better.
